(Please note: I am absolutely registering at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It's my happy place. I also plan on letting my sweetheart register for all sorts of fun stuff at REI. [Did you know REI has registries?!] But we're trying to decide on a third place and having trouble. Also please note that we are currently located in Utah and have no clue where we're going to end up or how much space we might have, so the idea of asking for furniture is currently ludicrous, though soon may be well-advised. Sweetie wants Crate & Barrel. I want Amazon.com.)

You could register for target gift cards (but not merchandise) and for Adam's you should register at Best Buy.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Matthew - definitely do NOT register for Target merchandise. We registered there, and it was an absolute nightmare, because if you received 5 waffle irons as gifts (which you may or may not have registered for) and didn't get a gift receipt, Target would only allow up to $25 returned merchandise per driver's license, PER YEAR if there was no receipt attached. And let's face it, no one remembers to ask for the stinkin gift receipt, and no one remembers to have the clerk remove the item from your list, so pretty much, you are stuck with one waffle iron you wanted, 2 that you could return (one returned for you and one returned for Adam, assuming they were less than $25), and two remaining waffle irons to regift at your friends' weddings...needless to say, Derek and I had a nightmare trying to work with their customer service, as we inevitably had more double-gifting problems than just the five waffle irons :)
ReplyDeleteBed Bath and Beyond, on the flip side, it like a dream come true compared to Target. They will return ANYTHING, with or without a receipt, whether or not it was on your registry, so long as it is something they carry in their store. Love them SO MUCH. But you already know that :)
Amazon would be a cool place to register at, and it would save your guests time since they wouldn't have to go out and shop; instead, they can stay at home in the comfort of their PJs - totally conducive to getting better gifts :)
I had some friends register at amazon.com and it was a great idea. We didn't have the problems Brenda had with target, but i still agree with her for the most part. BTW, as far as electronics go, Amazon is WAAAAAY less expensive than Best Buy.

ReplyDeleteYou should definitely register at either Williams-Sonoma or Crate and Barrel. ESP for the peeps in your parent's area. Lots of them will want to get you $$$ gifts and they can get lots of good options there. ALSO register for TONS of stuff - way more than you even want, because people spend more $ on gifts than they do on gift cards or checks and you can alwyas return/get credit!! Crate&Barrel i think gives cash back for registry items...(i think) and Williams Sonoma can be used at Pottery Barn and West Elm which is a bonus for pooling $ for furniture.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest word of advice is again to register several places and for tons and tons of stuff. Don't get lazy and give up. YOu can even register for stuff online and it's super easy. Don't try to decide now what you want - just click the buttons and decide after you get married and your brain works again.
i was going to say "DO NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT REGISTER AT TARGET!!!!!" but i see that's already been said, so i'll just second it. amazon sounds like an awesome idea! i wish that would have been a possibility when i was engaged!

also, i think registering at a number of places (even if it's only a few things/gift cards) is a good idea. because some people are lazy and they're going to get your gift at [fill in the blank] whether you registered there or not. so at least this way you've a shot at getting something remotely useful.
I agree about Target...blah. We also registered at Macy's...and that ended up being really good because a lot of older people on the guest list really like Macy's. Hehe! :) And, they give cash back for everything; their return policy is the best. We ended up getting our (amazing) mattress there with all the gift cards/return credit we had.
ReplyDeleteif you are going to register at bbb and rei then i recommend somewhere more upscale as well. pb or william sonoma or macys would be good choices. the best part about pb and ws is that the gift cards from there are inter-changable and they never expire! ive been married over 5 years and just used the end of my pb cards. booya!
ReplyDeleteBed, bath, and beyond is great. We did a few things at Macy's, and they were fantastic. You can't beat their customer service, and when I exchanged my Kitchenaid (twice) for different colors, they shipped it free to our house. You'll get enough Target giftcards from random people that you don't need to actually register there. Good luck.
